Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression. A serious condition that can last months or even years, that’s depression. Each year about 15 million Americans suffer from this illness. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses. Depression gets worse with time. It will get worse without treatment. It cannot be ignored.

Depression is caused by a variety of factors. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. The day to day lives of the victim may even have a role. It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind. Work continues into the mind and brain and how they work, what makes them tick. It’s clear that it’s an imbalance of chemical compounds in the brain that creates depression. We are learning more every day about how the whole process works. Better treatments come from more knowledge.

Depression treatment comes from a variety of medications on the market. Of course the market is full of ‘quick fix’ antidotes. Make sure the treatment has been studied and scientifically proven to address depression. There was a time in our history if you were afflicted by anything that was associated with mental illness you were thrown into a mental ward and lost in the system. That is a thing of the past, thank goodness. In 1988 the anti-depressant ‘Prozac’ first hit the market in the United States. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.

Since then a new class of anti-depressants has become popular as well. Currently depression is being treated with SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox. All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects. There are also numerous natural herbal medications available on the market. The majority of these that have been proven to work as well as the anti-depressants contain the St. John Wort extract ingredient called ‘hyperforin’. When this is present in the proper quantity it is a winner. Be careful, do your research and you will find effective medications to treat depression.
