An anxiety attack is a temporary, acute state of panic and dread which some people experience from time to time. In these disorders, one cannot banish the anxiety and fear from their mind during an attack. These feelings override rational thought and cause feelings of helplessness. Those who suffer from these attacks will have tried everything they can think of to make them go away. Here are some ways which have been helpful for some; though they may not work for every individual with a panic disorder.

Helpful Tips To Stop Anxiety Attacks

There is one nearly foolproof way to stop anxiety attacks, which is to take medication. Of course, these medications are available by prescription and are not permanent in their effects. Many save this as a last resort, preferring to overcome their disorder through natural methods before turning to pharmaceuticals.

Therapy and counseling may be helpful in controlling the anxiety which leads to anxiety attacks. Rather than allowing panic to control you, you can try to get a handle on your panic and anxiety by seeing a therapist. Some anxiety and panic attacks are related to post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Attacks which can be tied to PTSD are somewhat easier to treat than those caused by underlying psychological disorders.
To stop panic and anxiety attacks, breathing techniques have proven effective on some studies. Hyperventilation and shallow breathing are symptoms often seen in anxiety attacks and these can cause the sufferer to feel lightheaded, which just adds to their feelings of anxiety and panic. By concentrating on your breathing, you can alleviate somewhat the effects of a panic attack or an anxiety attack.

Another method which works for some to stop an attack is to start telling your mind what it should do. Anxiety attacks trigger the “fight or flight” response, with the natural urge being to flee the situation. Instead, try talking yourself down. Rationalize things to yourself – while this is difficult to do at first, it gets easier with practice and has worked for many.

Having more confidence is a way to keep anxiety at bay and stop anxiety attacks. Try being a little bolder and more confident in your own home, this will serve as practice. Keep at it and soon you may find that you are controlling your anxiety –and your life, rather than the other way round.
