A Young Male Hits The Bottom of the Barrel in Life, Prevails Over His Depression, Gets Alcohol Therapy for His Abusive and Excessive Drinking, and Bolsters His Self Esteem
December 15th, 2009 Posted in DepressionSamuel was a forty-nine-year-old insurance agent who was sick of feeling depressed everyday of his life and sick of his abusive and excessive drinking behavior. Stated briefly, he hated the hangovers he went through on a regular basis, he was mad at himself for spending his hard-earned money on a worthless habit, he was tired of going through shattered relationship after shattered relationship due to his irresponsible drinking, he was sick of feeling weary every morning, and he missed his old drive for doing the things he enjoyed.
Furthermore he was disgusted with how out-of-shape he was, he was bored with his drinking pals, he was annoyed with the many times he failed to pass an alcohol test at his workplace, he detested the fact that he had to go to court for his third DUI, and he was fed up with paying for alcohol-related attorney fees.
In addition to the observable alcohol-related health difficulties he was going through, almost certainly the nastiest part of his drinking routine was the untrustworthy and dishonest individual he had turned into. In his heart he knew that he had been less than truthful about his drinking behavior to his family, friends and relatives and he also knew he had been untruthful with himself about the “healthy” consequences of drinking. What is more, he made excuses for wolfing down three or four drinks before going to social events and he also justified needing one or two drinks as soon as he got up so that he could deal with the “anxiety” at his place of employment.
His Depression and His Heavy Drinking Lead to Significant Life Changes
Undoubtedly Samuel was sick of putting up with the adverse consequences of his depression and his abusive and excessive drinking and finally determined that something significant had to change in his life. So he made up his mind that he would quit drinking, develop a new circle of friends, get professional counseling, involve himself in some worthwhile hobbies, start focusing on becoming a more healthy person, and start exercising.
In short, Samuel got to the point in his life during which he understood that he hit the bottom of the barrel in his life and was now ready to start the slow road to health.
One of the ways that Samuel initiated his “plan” was by asking for a transfer at his workplace. When his request was approved, he moved 750 miles away to a new state. If nothing else, this unquestionably made making new friends and distancing himself from his old friends much easier. Then he went to see a physician in his new city and made an appointment for a comprehensive psychological and physical examination.
Samuel Meets With a Physician About His Abusive Drinking and His Depression
After meeting with the healthcare professional and going through a number of laboratory tests, it was determined that Samuel had made the transition from alcohol abuse to dependency on alcohol and as a result was in need of alcohol detox and alcohol rehabilitation. At this time, the doctor made it a point to review the different signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and information about long term effects of alcohol with Samuel.
The healthcare practitioner then told Samuel that it was decided that he was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for this medical issue.
Samuel Decides to Fortify His Body by Going to the Gym, Living an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle, Taking Vitamins, Eating Nutritious Foods, and Drinking Spring Water
Due to his readiness to follow through with the rehab program, after twelve weeks of residential treatment, Samuel was ready to start rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. At this point in time, he started working at his new job and over the weeks began building up his body by drinking distilled water, exercising, living an alcohol-free lifestyle, taking vitamins, and eating healthy foods.
Samuel also tackled his spiritual concerns by joining the local Catholic church and attending the weekly services.
After around four months of outpatient treatment during which time he never experienced an alcohol relapse, Samuel stopped going to alcohol therapy and instead began going five times per week to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Attending these meetings helped Samuel follow through with his alcohol-free way of life, they gave him the support he needed, and they served as a unceasing reminder of the dangerous consequences that are linked to excessive and abusive drinking.
After going to AA meetings just about two months Samuel felt that he was ready for a relationship and so he started dating Tina, a young lady he met at church. It clearly astonished Samuel how much more prepared he was for a dating relationship now that he had his careless and abusive drinking under control. In truth it also surprised Samuel how much better life was now that he wasn’t under the control of his excessive and hazardous drinking. Life was now joyful and loaded with potential that he could have never yearned for or fulfilled when he was engaged in excessive and careless drinking just a few short months ago.
A Success Story That is Proof of the Relevance of Alcohol Rehab and the Power of Change
Samuel’s success story is a verification of the significance of alcohol rehabilitation and the power of positive thinking. As Samuel thought about his newfound self-respect and motivation for involving himself in healthy, worthwhile activities, he was actually grateful that he decided to do something constructive about his excessive and abusive drinking rather than giving into his depression and into the lure of his alcohol addiction. The result: he is involved in a wholesome relationship, he enjoys his new job responsibilities, he has more energy now compared with any time in his adult life, he is in control of his life rather than letting himself stay under the control of his addiction, and his life now has a positive direction.
